War with the Apache and Chiracahua Indians is a moral quagmire for soldiers when they deal with Ulzana (Joaquin Martinez). McIntosh (Burt Lancaster) is one of the few military scouts engaged in the strife that realizes that the anger of the Native Americans is justified for loss of their culture and homes. Bible-thumpers like Lt. Garnett DeBuin (Bruce Davison) see the Apaches as vicious savages who must be exterminated, and Major Cartwright (Douglass Watson) gives orders to that effect. Some officers like Captain Charles Gates (Lloyd Bochner) want nothing to do with the horror being committed. Cynical observer McIntosh has a friend named Ke-Ni-Tay (Jorge Luke) who is related to Ulzana, but this Indian scout is willing to do the work needed to bring the furious terrorism by the rogue tribe to an end.
